Mania: excited state characterized by excess speech and motor activity. Hypomania: observed in certain types of bipolar disorder. Hypomanic states can be sometimes productive . Twin and adoption studies long story short: there are strong hereditary factors for both disorders. As with many disorders, what we know derives from the effective treatments, which often come before the cause is known, or even knowing how the treatment works.
