Chapter 15 (part 2) affective and anxiety disorders. Everyone feels sadness over disturbing events ( reactive depression), but when sadness is not related to external events: endogenous depression. Major depressive disorder (mdd) depression only. Bipolar disorder alternating cycles of depression and mania. Symptoms of the depression are similar to those of mdd. Mania: excited state characterized by excess speech and motor activity. Hypomania: observed in certain types of bipolar disorder. Hypomanic states can be sometimes productive . Handel"s messiah supposedly written during hypomanic episode. Poe, baudelaire, van gogh, etc reportedly bipolar. Twin and adoption studies long story short: there are strong hereditary factors for both disorders. As with many disorders, what we know derives from the effective treatments, which often come before the cause is known, or even knowing how the treatment works. Balances mood without affecting normal emotional response or cognition. Serendipitous discovery by australian psychiatrist john cade (1948)
