Ecological systems: children develop within a social world, each layer of that world influences dev"t. Extreme deprivation: romanian orphanages no parents, limited adult contact, affects early dev"t including attachment and later relationships. More typical parents: extreme deprivation is rare, but there are different approaches to parenting, within families and within cultures, one major model from dianna baumrind describes two dimensions of parenting. One goal of parenting is child"s internalization of values. Key to internalization is that child understands what parents want and why. East asia seen as typical and sign of love. Culture of honor in the us, south, true in spain too. Learned anew in each generation: a cultural value. Ex. if parents are racist or aggressive then the children are more likely to be as well. Cultural values = parent socialization groups = child behavior. India small villages, subsistence economy o collectivist values, strict parenting: us, boston o individualist values, parenting styles vary.
