Development and use of symbols/schemes and representations. Piaget believes that mental representations came first and allows children to use language. Vygotsky: language is necessary to think, language developed first. Egocentrism: tendency to perceive and understand the world in terms of oneself. Child believes what they see and experience is what everyone else also sees and experiences. Three mountain problem: child looks at a landscape from one perspective, while someone else watches landscape from another position; when asked what the other observer sees, child replies with what they see. Piaget: egocentric speech disappears after a certain age. Vygotsky"s believes that egocentric speech turns into private speech. Intuitive reasoning: simple tasks unaware of principles or reasons for how problems are solved. Rigidity of thought- frozen , concentration-tendency to attend to one salient feature of an event, ignore others. Leads to conservation errors (look at height of water in a glass while ignoring width)
