CAS PS 241 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Erogenous Zone, Oral Stage, Old Ideas
Document Summary
Organization: development is an organization of knowledge to increase understanding and a realistic view of the world. Child understands world through sensory and motor functions. Start using symbolic thought but lacks logical qualities. Can only think in terms of things they have already experienced, no hypotheticals or abstract thought. Assimilation: child integrates or relates new experiences or information to his existing knowledge. Not a lot of change or development occurs, they just add small details. Ex: a child sees a squirrel for the first time and calls it a kitty. Accommodation: child modifies knowledge base by incorporating new information. Old ideas are restructured and reorganized to understand the world. Ex: a child realizes over time that squirrels and cats have different characteristics (looks, one is domestic, diets, etc) and expands understanding to two distinct categories of four-legged mammals (cats and squirrels) Equilibrium: balance between current understanding of the world and new information.
