Literary fairy tales based on oral tales. Original literary tales (1500s) tale type - basic plot structure (archetypes) folklore - the traditional beliefs, customs, and stories of a community, passed through the generations by word of mouth (common people) 1400s: laborers told stories orally to pass the time during work- not necessarily for children (separation of adult and children stories) 1500s-1600s: italy (renaissance), fairy tales (for adults) begin to be written down in local languages (italian, french, etc. not latin) for aristocratic, literate people. 1600s-1700s: france (most powerful+wealthy country in europe at the time), fashionable to tell fairy tales. Charles perrault - the tales of mother goose 1697 (written as though for children) Mademoiselle de la force - early ver. of rapunzel 1689. Madame de villeneuve - beauty and the beast 1740. Madame de beaumont - beauty and the beast (rewritten) 1756. 1812 +1815: industrialization, collecting stories to preserve them. Nursery and household tales - jacob and wilhelm grimm.
