Nonverbal symbols alter/create reality: pictures change details of events as more is understood, or as different people interpret them. Advertisements, wordless commercials you don"t need words, but you still fully understand the message. Nonverbal symbols include: wordless way of making you feel a certain way (ex. Opening of the movie, up: vocalics, visuals, kinesics, provemics, haptics, artifacts. Proxemics: establishes parameters of relationships, context based, culturally based. Edward t. hall distance zones: public zone 12 feet, social zone 4-12 feet, personal zone 1. 5-4 feet, intimate zone 0-1. 5 feet. Types of meaning: denotative meaning, connotative meaning. Denotative meaning objective, dictionary-like definition of a word: most widely used meaning. Connotative meaning interpretively charged meaning of word: more emotionally charged, often based on a personal experience or relationship, includes socially charged definition. Spreading/sharing meaning: teaching of words and meaning, meanings may vary based on individual experiences, naming new experiences (usually a combination of old names) ex. ) E-mail = internet + mail: mass communication.
