Variety comedy(snl)- new audience, realized the commercial significance of young ppl as viewers new youth . Challenged the norm of a single host. Recreate the feel of a comedy show in a club. Was shown on primetime(nbc) so his comedy had to be castrated to be more appropriate for the audience. Broadcast television tries not to offend anyone bc they are selling ads. Broadcast signals don"t know geographic boundaries so shows like monty. Python"s flying circus which were shot in england were being televised in. Everythings was live, centered in nyc not hollywood. By the 70s live television stopped being center in nyc moved to la, no longer the norm. Appeal is around the idea that anything can happen at any moment. Importance of schedule- late night vs primetime (limitations) Cable doesnt exists with the same restrictions as broadcast does. From character is where the story/conflict/comedy is drawn. Comedic premise: expression of main characters dilemma.
