Human/animal comm debate? we choose to focus on human comm bc its easier/more reliable/provides boundaries/more professionally practical. Kenneth burke definition of man: symbol users, misusers and creators/ inventors of the negative/ goaded by the spirit of hierarchy(how we fit relative to others)/ separated from natural condition by instruments of their own making/rotten with perfection. Words have etymological roots- common roots create shared meaning. Public (few to many, often in person) Mass comm (few to very many & always mediated) Symbolic- a symbol is any representative of a thought, idea or concept, don"t have to be big or deep to matter. Verbal symbols(written language is a verbal symbol) Arbitrary- things don"t have natural names, we name them based on how we use them. Sender/encoder (decides how to exchange the idea) Channel (how the idea gets from sender to receiver) Feedback (how the receiver responds to the message)
