Washington set amazing precedent by giving up presidency after 2 terms and put up with negative press and criticism (part of job to accept and deal) However, wealthy was disinterested because already financially secure. Hamilton and jefferson took advantage of new partisan press. Befriended editors and began founding new ones. New idea of journalism included opinions, commentary, invective; reporting has not yet been invented. Papers measured success by political faction success. *alien and sedition acts 1798- federalist prosecutors imprison opponents. Created crime of printing disloyal conspiracies against government, promoted riots or published false, scandalous or malicious writing against the government. Passed by congress july 1798 by federalist majority and adam signed into law. 15 anti-federalist editors in jail and 10 convicted. Benjamin franklin beach (aurora), first to be arrested and died awaiting trial= first martyr of free press.
