Race and gender: categories that make a difference. Used in criteria of stratification every culture uses gender. Race details differ from one culture to the next. Your own experience is not a good gage on the parts of the stratification system: not accurate reflection how it works in entire society, own personal experience not good indicator, race. How real is race: word has been around for long time but relatively new in way used today, old use not hateful; people live in different climate we live in; different exposure to sun due to climate. First did not assume any biologically based differences between race; not a big difference: only in past 400 years race used in way used today persistent biologically based. Extremely hateful and insulting; inferior to europeans. How many races are there: the human genome project tells us the answer is one.
