Mao was thought to be god/perfect hard to make changes after him: deng xiaoping had to deal with mao"s standing and reputation. By 1970s, many unhappy people in china: culture revolution turned up their lives. Schools run on political standards, not economical standards: nobody learns anything except maoism, undermines entire generation of kids. When mao shuts down red guards they"re sent to countryside: only can get through using back door. Standard of living was back to where was in 50s before great leap forward: many unhappy with what mao did but can"t do anything when he"s alive. Hua was mao"s designated successor and gets together with deng: hua pushed aside. Modernize agriculture, industry, science and technology, and defense. Foreign policy now had foreign trade: western businessmen initially happy to trade with china, but then realized china just wanted them to set up shop and manufacture. Only wanted them to buy what couldn"t make themselves.
