Document Summary

Methodological atheism: all religious concepts and social institutions are human externalizations. I. e. notion of gods and devils is created by man. Phenomenological approach: describing the lived experience of a phenomenon. I. e. describes belief and religion on their own terms. Solution : learn a mental process that allows for this. Church: identify moments that we all have but read them in a different way. Moments of: sudden awareness, dissonance, hallucinations, sudden thoughts ( don"t do that! ), etc. Discernment: what was once seen as random is now understood as presence of external being in mind. Not cartesian: mind is not separate from world. No mention of politics: abortion, sexuality, etc. Focuses on: mastering a set of mental tools (not doctrine); people (in her book) are worried about making god come alive, not heresy. Lifeworld: faith or way of being in the world. Identifier of populations, often to contest/protect political interests. Inter-religion violence as politics is rooted in modernity.
