IGS 10a Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Lagaan, Dalit, Latte
Document Summary
Korean slides will be on latte page and will be on test. Review sheet tonight, review session on wednesday. A little more writing/think pieces (art and culture). Think about themes of class as represented by this section. A story of indian nationalism as the indian majority would like to see it. Matches our account of westernism and westernization quite nicely. Talked about how with decolonization, colonized countries strived to be nationalist and independent. India learned the game of nationalism and soveriengty and economic growth and is on its way to beating england at that. Saw ways in which lagaan is a nationalist story (india itself is transformed from set of independently governed nation-states to a strong national state united by a political unity) Bhuvan essentially overthrows tribal elders of his society, takes bet, and leads the team to victory - getting rid of tradition. Nationalism is not the reassirtion of traditional identity its the refforming of this idetnity.
