Receptive fields = what in the real world causes a response to a neuron = the best stimulus. Your sensory are not designed to report what is really out there. Illusions in vision, what is ignored in audition. Our auditory system is designed to hear what matters rats can hear very high-pitched things in order to hear the ultrasonic squeals of baby rats. We want to know what the sound is (what made the sound and what it means) and where the sound is coming from (keeping us alert) Audition is there to help us answer the questions should i eat it, should i fear it, should i attempt to mate with it. Sound waves are periodic compressions of air, water, etc. Compressed air is being pushed at the speed of sound. Physical wave of rhythmic compressed air particles moving through air = the basic stimulus.
