BIOL 1260 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Antibody, Prostacyclin, Blood Vessel
Document Summary
General: condition that results from heart disease, 50% mortality rate over 5 years, heart is unable to pump enough blood to body systems. Characterized by: progressive cardiac dysfunction, 70% is due to lv dysfunction (mainly coronary artery disease (cad), hypertension, valvular disease. Heart failure: results from any structural or functional abnormality that impairs ability of ventricle to eject blood (systolic heart failure) or to fill with blood (diastolic heart failure) Pulmonary edema: severe fluid build-up in lungs: **accumulation of fluid in lungs causes one of main symptoms = shortness of breath. Right-sided failure: right ventricle and atrium can"t accept all blood returning to heart, blood backs up into veins and capillaries fluid leaks out of capillaries to tissues swelling/edema/fluid accumulation especially in legs. Diagnosis: echocardiogram (echo): uses ultrasound, determines ejection fraction (ef) = percent of blood pumped out of ventricles with each heart beat.
