Document Summary

Direction: an angular measurement from a specific reference line. People used to assume north was always constant, but in reality it"s always changing. The difference between true north and magnetic north is called declination. If magnetic north is east of true north then it is an easterly declination (12 53" e) We are changing 5 minutes west per year. We generally don"t use a compass or take sun/star shots. We generally do use direction of an existing line. Bearing: angles from north or south, going east or west, cw or ccw. Biggest differenc and bearings is t read cw, bearing. Ex: azimuth of 34 30" = n 34 30" e. Ex: azimuth of 134 30" = s 45 30" e. Ex: azimuth of 234 30" = s 54 30" w. Ex: azimuth of 334 30" = n 25 30" w. Looking opposite direction on same line, so 180 difference. Bearing from a to b of n 54 w.
