1900s-1970s the united states carried out a massive campaign of non consensual sterilization. Thousands of victims were forcefully sterilized on the basis of race, poverty, and/or intellect. 32 states had formal sterilization programs, federally and state funded. California alone conducted over 20,000 involuntary sterilizations and other states had high numbers as well. Civil rights movement produced a white backlash. Ihs were infamous for sterilizing native american women (federally funded hospitals) Sterilization became a new mode to control and oppress bodies of color once. Federal government said that sterilization was due to welfare reform and population control. Most sterilizations of black women were not performed under the auspices of the eugenics law. 1970s: sterilization was the fastest growing form of birth control. Medicaid provided nancial incentive to doctors to perform hysterectomy vs a tubal ligation. Hysterectomies were 20 times more dangerous than tubal ligation.
