Chapter 1 and 2: history and research methods. Psychology sometimes is different than what we would expect from daily life. Most people think violent video games lead to aggressiveness. However, there are not very strong psychological studies, not a lot of scientific stuff. We are attracted to novelty, something new we haven"t seen before. Blonde started because it was new, it was an advantage. Some of our less desirable behaviors, racism etc, comes from the hunter gatherer stick together mentality. Our thinking in our cerebral cortex offsets some of these instinctive behaviors. Psychology: psyche- mind logos- the study of students of the mind. Contemporary definition: the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. We can see what can go on in the mind with fmri. This can be used for research or could maybe be used for lie detection. Psychology could have ethical implications could have ethical implications.
