PSY 201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Mesolimbic Pathway, Brain Size, Behavioural Genetics
Document Summary
How much or a role do genes play in conditions. Only about the variance over a population. Heritability: the statistical likelihood that variation observed in a population is due to genetics . Does not pertain to individuals, only groups of people. Ex: height, measure everyone, see the amount of genes that pertain to height. How big of a component is genetic. We do not have genes for complex conditions. A behavioral geneticist would see what impact certain genes have on disorders. Artificial selection: selective breeding of different individuals to try to get certain traits into the next generation. Natural selection: traits that help you survive and have more offspring will be passed down. Natural selection: survival and reproductive success based on genetic components. Mutation: when a mutation has a positive effect, it will expand in the next generation: if it is not advantageous , it will disappear, ex: blonde hair was a novelty, more noticeable, better reproductive success.
