N-rem and repairing the body: non-rem , parasympathetic, rest and repair. Rem sleep, learning, dreams, and mood: vivid dreams, learning and memory, mood, frontal lobes not active in rem. Not logical dreams, logical brain is not turned on: back of the brain more active. Occipital lobe, secondary visual cortex is more busy in rem then when you are awake. Vivid dreams: babies and young children spend more time in rem than we do. Nightmares and night terrors: nightmare: bad content dreams. Wake up in the middle of the night. Cannot really say what was happening in the dream. Insomnia: poor sleep quality, have difficulty initiating sleep, can be life style, sometimes people can go to sleep, but are waking up quite frequently. Similar to sleep patterns in major depressive disorder. Narcolepsy and cataplexy: sudden falling asleep, going into any kind of stress can immediately trigger rem sleep, complete lack or low level of a neurochemical called orexins/hypocretins, cataplexy: milder form.
