Document Summary

Not all drugs show tolerance, or show tolerance of only some of their effects, but not others. Body compensates, so when you take the drug away, you just have the way that it was compensating. Like little kids: seek out pleasure whenever they have the opportunity. Overwhelms the frontal lobe, gets in the way of decision making. Abstaining is what you have to do to quit. 1-5 years to reset the brain so the frontal lobe has a chance to put the addiction in check. People who have been addicted almost never forget their addiction, and have to constantly keep it in check. More americans have quit smoking than currently smoke. Vietnam war: heroin was brought back by soldiers. With the exception of people who had a drug habit when they were drafted, the people who had picked up the habit just quit when they came home. In our culture when we treat an addiction it is usually not voluntary.
