Document Summary

This type of story is unique to the west. Your freedom lies in how you accept or not accept your fate- your attitude and ability to compromise. The tragic character"s refusal to compromise is fascinating. Although both he and oedipus are said to be good leaders, they do not act in sympathy for their community. How do we get it? (read the play) Oedipus information: date of production- unknown did not win the festival. Oedipus the king can only cleanse thebes discovering the identity of laius"s murderer. Excellent example of aristotle"s suggestion of dramatic reversal: a fall from great height. Aristotle"s argument: the ultimate function of art is to teach citizens how to create a stronger more moral society. Didactic (to teach): intentions of reality can be instructive. Aristotle starts by asking the question: why do humans make art? . He argued that nature mimics itself (reproduces) and so humans (like nature) must mimic each other for a purpose.
