Not treated as a symptom of another condition. Addiction must be first be treated for other problems to be resolved. One exception is co-occurring disorders, where a patient needs to be stabilized to participate in counseling. Counselors must be supportive, empathetic and develop a collaborative relationship throughout treatment. Directive, structured and manage treatment in addiction. Don"t tell client what to do but work together toward facilitating recovery, make it so the client is doing it because they want to. Sometimes you have to be harsh in order to do what is right. For example, if someone you are counseling is on probation and self reports a relapse, it"s up to you to tell their po. Variety of patient mix: there are tons of different people from all over the spectrum. Keeping clients motivated to keep coming to counseling sessions and to keep up with treatment. Problems with following up on sessions and treatment, including minimization of problems by former clients.
