Document Summary

Mitochondria are derived from an endosymbiotic bacterial ancestor. Mitochondrial function is much more efficient than glycolysis at harnessing the energy stored in glucose. Summary reaction of glycolysis: glucose + 2 nad+ + 2 adp + 2 pi ---> 2 pyruvate + 2 nadh + 2 h+ + 2 h2o: glucose has been only partially oxidized, only 2 atp molecules have been synthesized. Mitochondria oxidize pyruvate completely to co2, by three groups of sequential reactions: the citric acid cycle, electron transport along the respiratory chain, oxidative phosphorylation. The citric acid cycle: each pyruvate yields three co2 molecules, only one atp molecule (actually, one gtp) is generated directly by the citric acid cycle for each pyruvate oxidized, coenzymes are reduced during pyruvate oxidation. Fad is reduced to fadh2 these reduced coenzymes are high-energy compounds. Electron transport along the respiratory chain: energy is released during reoxidation of the coenzymes as the electrons are transferred to molecular oxygen.
