Three major types of animals that live on range: Wild-animals exist in a natural state (very vast) Domestic- animals have become accustomed to human control and provision. Feral-animals are domesticated animals that have been allowed to revert to a wild state (horses) Herbivores: plant eaters graze and browse vegetation (short time looking for food, long time eating) browsing= ability to eat shrubs/woody plants. Search, hunt, consume other animals (long time looking for food, short time consuming food) Eat meat and vegetation like roots, berries, seeds, and young shoots (ex=bears) Cellulose- most abundant form of energy on rangelands. Very complicated structure that makes up large percentage of plants. 3 types of animals on rangelands: concentrate selectors- can not digest cellulose. Eat 0. 25% of their body weight per day. Herbivores- limited ability to ferment & use cellulose. Get energy from simple carbs like sugar & starch. Get energy and nutrients from pre-formed compounds i. e. meat.
