Document Summary

Cell"s ability to transform energy is a characteristic of all life. Energy flows through our ecosystem entering as light energy and leaving as heat. Fixed number of moles of elements on our planet. Chemical/nutrients are going to cycle within an ecosystem. Biogeochemical cycles critical to functioning of life on earth. Radiant energy (light energy) = electromagnetic waves. Categorize organisms based on the type of energy they use. Photoautotrophs - able to obtain energy from sunlight; carry out photosynthesis. Autotrophs - produce their own food; obtain carbon/building blocks from co2. Heterotrophs - get carbon from organic compounds; somebody has made those carbon compounds that are now available. Chemotrophs - obtain energy from chemical compounds. Kinetic energy - energy of motion/movement (ex. Thermal e); associated w/ random movement of atoms or molec. Potential energy- energy that matter has due to location or structure (ex. Chemical e); associated w/ position of atoms or electron in atom.
