Document Summary

Basic structure, types, and locations: skeletal cartilage is made of some variety of cartilage tissue molded to fit its body location and function. It acts like a girdle to resist outward expansion when the cartilage is compressed: there are 3 types of cartilage: They are found only in 2 skeletal locations the external ear and the epiglottis: fibrocartilage is highly compressible with great tensile strength, and consists of alternating thick collagen fibers. They occur in sites that are subjected to both pressure and stretch, such as the knee and the discs between vertebrae: cartilage has a flexible matrix, which can accommodate mitosis. It grows in 2 ways appositional growth and interstitial growth. Appositional growth is when cartilage- forming cells in the surrounding perichondrium secrete new matrix against the external face of the existing cartilage tissue. Interstitial growth is the lacunae-bound chondrocytes divide and secrete new matrix, expanding the cartilage from within.
