BIOL-2230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Myocardial Infarction, Mesoderm, Oncotic Pressure
Document Summary
Pulse: wave of pressure in artery from blood passing through. More blood goes to certain tissue depending on its need: not equal throughout the body. Regulated locally by modifying diameter of arterioles. Far more capillaries than anything else in our body. Velocity is high in arteries, slow in capillaries, and high in the veins. Low levels of nutrients or oxygen cause vasodilation and relaxation of precapillary. Inversely related to cross-sectional area of vessels sphincters: the places that needs it have more coming its way, metabolic effect. Changes in stretch of vessel causes response in smooth muscle of vessel: more stretching causes more constriction, myogenic effect. Angiogenesis increases number and size of vessels: production of new blood vessels, need more oxygen to an area, body produces new blood vessels. Respiratory gases and lipid-soluble molecules pass via direct diffusion. Water-soluble solutes pass through intercellular clefts and fenestrations. As blood arrives, blood is forced out.
