Capitalist is the innate enemy of socialism. Soviets had to defend themselves for they expected to be attacked. Wwi caused the near collapse of every country. Bolsheviks came to power in russia and withdrew russia from the war. * brest-litovsk: peace agreement and land given to germany. Trotsky claimed not to fight or sue for peace because the longer war goes on germany is under strain and the workers will rise up. Lenin liked that idea, but the germans kept conquering and threatened their power. Lenin won debate by sacrificing ideology for power. Western powers refused to recognize the soviet government.
