SOMATIC SYMPTOMS AND RELATED DISORDERS … MENTAL CONDITIONS
Psychological factors affecting other medical conditions - the person with this diagnosis
has a medical symptom or condition other than a mental disorder. The person also has
psychological or behavioral factors that adversely affect the condition. It affects it in one
or more of the following ways:
Influence the course of condition (ex: the person started smoking and got lung
cancer)
Interfere with treatment of condition (ex: the person is claustrophobic so can’t get
MRI)
The factors constitute additional health risks (the person has a gastric condition
and they drink alcohol that makes ulcers worse)
It otherwise influences it

ELIMINATION DISORDERS
1. Enuresis - when the person repeatedly urines in their bed or clothing. Needs to be
causing distress or apparent. This happens often. The person is old enough to be
expected to be able to hold their bladder
Treatment: enuresis alarm
Intentional or involuntary
2. Encopresis - when the person repeatedly passes feces in to inappropriate places
(clothes or floor). Involuntarily or intentionally
Person is at least 4 years old
Overflow in contenance - a kid that has had an unpleasant experience with
pooping because it hurts so they avoid pooping. They get constipated
The person is not like “haha I’ll go poop in the corner” even though they can
intentionally choose to do so
Frequency is a lot less
SLEEP/WAKE DISORDERS - the primary reason people come in for sleep evaluations is
because they feel tired
1. Insomnia Disorder - when the person complains about their sleep quantity or quality and
this is when they have trouble initiating sleep, maintaining sleep, or early morning
awakening without the ability to go back to sleep
Clinically significant distress or impairment
Has to occur frequently and for a relatively long period of time
If you are a full time undergraduate and have an infant (for an example) this does
not count as having the disorder. The disorder has to be due to internal factors,
not internal
