Commanders on both sides send troops over the top of the trenches in order to break through the enemy lines. Attack other side with barrage of artillery, leave enemy in shock, and then send troops to the other trenches. Scale of war is massive- new technology allows for more carnage. February 4th 1915: germany announces that it will begin unrestricted submarine warfare on enemy ships in the war zone. Germany warns neutrals to stay out of the war zone. Citizens of neutral nations should not book passage on liners that belong to belligerents. 1916: the us makes several attempts to end the war. Us sends an emissary to great britain to work out terms before going to. Sussex pledge, which requests that germany won"t sink merchant ships without warning and without offering assistance. Us has to convince great britain to lift blockade on germany, or it won"t work. Us relationship with great britain is proportional to relationship with germany.
