Document Summary

We must consider two major classes of bonds in biochemistry. A covalent bond is a chemical bond that involves the sharing of electrons between two atoms. Main atoms in biology: carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen. C w/ 4 single bonds sp3 hybridized. To change conformation, there must be rotation around a bond. Cis/trans (cis same side of bond; trans opposite sides) Bond dissociation energy the energy required to break a chemical bond. Hydrogen bond an electrostatic interaction between an electronegative atom and the hydrogen atom covalently bound to another electronegative atom. Electronegativity measure the ability of an atom to attract electrons to itself in a covalent bond. Ionic bond electrostatic interaction between two atoms/molecules with formal charges. Formal charges arise when an atom has less (+) or more (-) valence shell electrons in the lewis structure as compared to the bare atom. (+) cation; (-) anion. Usually an o atom w/ a single bond or an n atom w/ 4 bonds.
