We are better at remembering when tested in the same context as we learned something. What we learn in one mental-state is more easily recalled in that same mental- state. Pushing painful memories or unacceptable memories into our unconscious mind. Traumatic experiences tend to produce stronger memories not repress them. Memories retrieved from ltm become active in or working memory, and then are subject to being restored with any additional information thought of while recalling that memory.
