John staunton: physicalism, also called naturalism, huge issue in different subfields in philosophy, this says that everything in philosophy can be explained by science, religious thinker would, then, not be a physicalist i. ii. iii. They want to believe in souls and abstract concepts, even like god. These are not physical entities, and therefore cannot be explained by science. Physicalists will say that mental states are just brain states. One basic way people have illustrated this problem is mental causation: mental causation i think i need a cup coffee, because i"m tired, so i"m gonna go get a cup of coffee i. ii. iii. You will deliberate about the coffee, you may think you need something else, you may think you need to focus on homework, etc. On the inside, it seems like you are doing the reasoning and arrive at the conclusion oh, well, I"m going to go get myself a cup of coffee.
