Black students came from places with failing elementary schools placed into basic classes so they wouldn"t fall behind in standard classes. 1 (1950s): parents, community, teachers, heads of the fraternities/sororities, administration had most power. If a teacher says you"re wrong, you"re wrong. Student handbooks didn"t exist, but rather a deep social contract between authoritative teachers and students. Teachers" rights trump students" rights, and students didn"t really question this authority hierarchy. Courts said proportionality had to be represented in a student body. 1969: tinker vs. des moines case (students don"t shed their constitutional rights at the schoolhouse door) led to protesting. Right of free speech cannot extend to disrupting the educational process, however tension of rights. Students had more control over their own tracking in later chapters because they were gaining student rights/authority. Tracking (sorting african american students into more basic classes) Students and teachers spoke to each other about which courses to take.
