PHIL 1100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Compatibilism
Document Summary
Brings to surface clash between kant and the utilitarian. What someone does is not fully under their control, yet we treat them as morally responsible for it. Strong intuition that you can"t hold someone responsible for things that are not under their control. On one hand, we believe in the control principle; on the other hand, we ignore it all the time. Driving a car, send a text, realize you have run a stop sign. If there is no harm, considered a reckless action. Same degree of negligence; only difference is outside factor of child in crosswalk. Attempted murder versus actual murder (maybe i intend to shoot and i misfire/bird flies in path of bullet) Having to face the decision to join the nazis in order to protect your family. Morally unlucky to have to make the decision to hurt someone when that is the best of their options. Temperament (someone very calm/easygoing versus someone with a hot temper)
