Document Summary

Before wwii there was a civil war in china between: Nationalists: the chinese nationalist party called guomindang (gmd) with jiang jieshi, openly: support from the us, they were unpopular, because they raised taxes. Communists: the chinese communist party (ccp) with mao zedong. During wwii they fought together against japan, but after that the battle was resumed. Communists won, and mao zedong proclaimed the people"s republic of china. Definition: the official name of communist or mainland china. The prc came into existence in 1949 under the leadership of mao zedong. Why win: new democracy approach -> socialism could only be achieved through the proletariat leading a broadly-based alliance of classes. Consequence: us influence is declining in asia, because mao zedong saw the us as the imperialist main enemy and as an exploiter of chinese resources. What followed were 20 years of animosity between the two countries. Note: china had a place in the security council.
