Levels of language description: what is linguistics, competence (knowing language) vs. Performance ("window" to linguistic competence: descriptive - not prescriptive - approach to language, 9 design features of language. Branches of phonetics: articulatory (speech production, acoustic, auditory (speech production) Phonology = knowledge about the english sound system and its rules. Articulatory phonetics: production of sound: 3 central components in sound producing system, lungs, larynx (voice box, vocal tract above the larynx articulators/ organ of speech. Larynx (voice box: the larynx contains, vocal cords (folds, glottis - the cavity between the vocal cords, depending on the state of the vocal folds, we distinguish two types of sounds. The vocal tract: articulators/ organs of speech (essential for exam!: passive organs of speech (articulators): e. g. alveolar ridge, hard palate, active organs of speech (articulators): e. g. lips, tongue. Standard internationally acceptable system of phonetic transcription: 72 consonants and 25 vowels in studied languages of the world.
