Document Summary

We are of the impression that sincerity is a disposition to make sure that one"s assertion expresses what one believes. Assertion aims to communicate beliefs, so that besides asserting beliefs, a trusted asserter would also lead listener to believe some of his beliefs. He takes a lie to be an assertion whose contents the speaker believes to be false - which is made with the intention to deceive the hearer with regard to that content. Problems with determining if it is a lie: uncertainty as to whether it is actually an assertion, whether speaker believes it to be false, whether intention is to deceive the hearer. This happens with children who have to be taught the difference between the truth and lies. If woman says: someone has been opening your mail . She does not lie but deceives, intentionally misleads you to believe falsehood. Half truth failed to assert another belief of hers.
