Two types of socialization: anticipatory socialization, the process of socialization in which a person rehearses for future positions . Practicing, training: resocialization, the process of discarding former behavior patterns and accepting new ones often takes place in total institutions. Institutions (not buildings, but entities) that regulate all aspects of a person"s life. Family is the most important agent of socialization. Also, school, peer groups, mass media, work, religion, government. Agents of socialization are the persons, groups, or institutions that teach us what we need to know to participate effectively in society. Parenting styles: authoritarian parents use their power to control a child"s behavior, authoritative parents set reasonable limits but are warm and responsive set rules but never follow through with the consequences. Want to be their children"s friend ---- most beneficial for children: permissive parents set few rules but are usually warm and responsive, uninvolved parents are indifferent and focus on their own needs.
