Modes of action that do not conform to the norms or values held by most members of a group or society. Norms: rules of conduct that specify appropriate behavior in a given social situation or context. Norms typically reflect divisions of power, class, gender, race, etc. E. g. , chambliss reading on saints" and roughnecks"; or bergen county vs. union county youths. Sanctions: formal or informal ways of rewarding or punishing behavior to ensure conformity with social expectations. Better to think of deviance than deviants": nobody breaks all rules. Sometimes deviance is just odd ways of trying to observe norms (e. g. , when you gotta go ) Deviance can be practiced by individuals or groups. A subculture whose members hold values that differ substantially from those of the majority. E. g. , straight edge, hell"s angels, the amish, jazz musicians.
