Rom: amount of normal mobility of joint; general blanket term that does not tell much, determined by the structure of the joint. Rom is affected by all the tissue systems that cross a joint. Flexibility: ability to elongate with application of stretching force (differing it from rom), determined by stiffness or pliability. Hypomobility: decreased amount of mobility; restricted motion. Contracture: adaptive shortening, joint capsule, significant resistance to rom and limits rom, designated and named by location. Elbow flexion contracture: flexors of elbow are limited so there is poor elbow extension. End feel: nature of resistance that is felt at the end of joint movement; spring-like motion. Muscle and tendon is spring-like; capsule is more firm. Prolonged immobilization; splints, casts : the longer immobilization, the more difficult it is to regain motion. Sedentary lifestyles: may lead to contractures due to sedentary lifestyles or habitual faulty postures. Paralysis: stroke, peripheral nerve injury, spinal injury.
