Document Summary

Information- processing model: similar to computer processes of memory. Memory processes take place at same time over a large network of neural connections. Sensory memory- all information lost within a second or so. Short-term memory- unrehearsed information is lost in about 15 to 30 seconds. Long-term memory- information is retained indefinitely although some information may be difficult to retrieve. Ability to focus on subset of stimulus from all sensory input. Sensory memory: large capacity, exact representation of information, very short in duration (4 secs or less) Short- term memory (stm) : information is held for brief period of time while being used. Limited capacity: about 7+-2 items diff text. Chunking: combining individual units of information into one unit, more info can be held. Ex: to memorize a long number, we use the phone code (714) as a number. Conclusion: we have a lot of information going through the short term memory but only a few goes to long term memory.
