Morphology
- What is morphology?
o The study of the smallest meaningful units of language
- What are the meaningful units?
o Morphemes (for both spoken and signed languages)
▪ Free – fully conceptualized on its own
• Bike
• Window
• Hat
• Drink
• Walk
▪ Bound – relies on another morpheme for its conceptualization
• -ed
• -ing
• Un-
• -s
• -able
- Be careful: some units can be phonemes/parameters in one situation and morphemes in
another
- The “-IXES”
o Because spoken languages are linear, bound morphemes are added onto the word
▪ Prefix: added to the beginning of a morpheme
▪ Suffix: added to the end of a morpheme
▪ Infix: inserted into other morphemes
▪ Circumfix: added to the beginning and end of a morpheme
o Example – premeditated (3 morphemes)
