A composition that is ahead of its time as it is hard to understand. This piece is difficult because it"s hard to determine its meaning. Above the coffin, there is a black square framed by a white square which is a suprematist painting. The figure has a confrontational stare and the setting is against color blobs. These expressions in the background almost echo in his face and hair. He is lost in these shapes which have given his awful stare a metaphysical expression. Not just a woodcutter but a peasant (from the look of his hair and his clothes) Leo tolstoy(1890"s) came from an aristocratic family and has a proper education and he was a famous author. Yet in the picture he is not dressed like an aristocrat but is dressed as a peasant without shoes. He has rejected the possibilities of fame and instead has accepted a simple life.
