No distinction of class levels as in european music. Pentatonic scales but using a different collection of notes. These form the basis of the blues scale. There"s not a clear definitive origin of the blues. It was however very influential over rock music. What is truly remarkable is that this music survived under the most brutal conditions imaginable; a testament to the power of music. Rock music integrates music from both streams, both african and european musical culture. Call and response: vocalist (minister) that chants out a line/riff, depending on situation, and the congregation responds (eric clapton sings something and then responds with his guitar) There was a time when western musicians were discovering this kind of music, and it was considered bad and classified as noise. In this example we hear the remarkable similarities between an early 20th century recording of a black vocal song and a fieldworker in senegal, showing the faithful retention of african style:
