Stripped down version of big bands (fewer horns with the same basic rhythm section) Offbeat rhythms form bridge between fox trot rhythm and rock rhythm. Emerged after wwii because people were drafted and so on. Expanded verse/refrain form (12-bar pattern for the verse chorus uses last 8 bars of standard 12-bar blues pattern) Easier to balance the sounds of the band on the recording. Earlier, the bandleader had to mix the sounds himself while playing/recording. Combines white hymnody, black spiritual, fervent religious music and the blues. Thomas a. dorsey (georgia tom) father of gospel music. Two main performance traditions: male quartets (most often a capella), and female soloists (men can cover lower/middle notes, women can"t) Harmonic language is a combination of traditional european and blues coloration. Substantial legacy to doo-wop, motown, soul, contemporary r&b. Voices used as instruments to create (train) rhythm and melody. Blues influenced (good spirited, unlike classic blues music)
