Clapton came to the blues from the outside, learning from his encounters with. During the 60"s he refined his conception of the blues and incorporated it into the cream"s music. Clapton"s command of the guitar facilitated extended solos using fast vibrato, bent notes, free rhythms, heavily inflected notes, all combined to create vocally inspired musical gestures. Cream"s studio work was quite different from their live performances. Call & response, and bending of notes (blues inspired) Clapton"s riff is derived from electric blues and updated with a rock rhythm. Intertwined melodic strands created by the riff, solo and bass line. Essence of blues guitar style in a rock song. Brief but brilliant career, cut short by his death in 1970. One of the most admired and emulated guitarist of the rock era. Virtuoso style leans on blues and jazz influence. Innovation as a rock showman (playing behind his head, between his legs, lighting his guitar on fire, etc. )
