Document Summary
Ethnic conflict management in africa: a comparative case study of nigeria and south. We are given a case study of south africa and nigeria. The author argues ethnic divisions began with colonialism. The colonizing states exploited ethnic differences and turned groups of people against each other for the colonizers" own benefit. Once the imperial powers left, the divides only continued and become more pronounced. Both south africa and nigeria have experienced the furthering of systematic ethnic divisions in communities all the way up to in form of government policy. The author argues, however, that people are not inherently violent and biased toward their ethnic group. He says people only team up along ethnic lines when they need an economic gain, and then as soon as that goal is achieved, they disband from the group. Therefore, he argues these ethnic tensions will continue if each country continues to fail to provide human freedoms for their people.
