To understand how things in the broadest sense of the term hang together in the broadest sense of that term. Contrast w/ science: also tries to achieve knowledge or understanding of the world. There are many clams about the world that are presupposed by science and scientific method. Whether these claims are true or warranted to believe are philosophical questions, unanswerable by science itself: ex. There is a mind-independent world that exists in space and time. 3 main questions of philosophy: 3 main branches. What should i do? (ethics: logic is the 4th main branch of philosophy. Subfield of political philosophy, subfield of ethics: philosophy also deals with metaphysical and epistemology. Do we have an obligation to obey the law?) Study of correct reasoning: on logic we try to separate good kinds of reasoning from bad kinds. Major concepts in logic: statement, truth, argument, validity, soundness statement. Sentence that describes the world as being a certain way.
